Contrast - reseach (paintings)

Hi guys! Today I am going to talk about two paintings that include contrast.  One of them has bad contrast overall but does include good contrast too, and then the other painting has good contrast. I am going to talk about the colours in each painting and what contrast is shown in the painting.

Mona Lisa

The painting to the left of this paragraph was painted by Leonardo Da Vici in 1503/06. This painting is roughly 511 years old.

The colours on Mona Lisa's dress are mostly dark which makes the painting less eye-catching than other paintings.  So this means that the contrast isn't that good.

However, the background is a lot more colourful than the dress.  The background includes the colours green and blue which are a lot brighter than dark brown.

The green/blue background contrasts against Mono Lisa's dress because the background stands out a lot more than the dark dress.

Girl with a Pearl Earring

This painting to the left was painted by Jan Vermeer in 1665, this was painted around 349 years ago.

This painting includes a mixture of colours, this is because the hand-band the girl is wearing includes bright blue and yellow. The blue and yellow contrasts the black background.

The girl's skin in the painting is very pale so this makes her skin very bright and also her red lipstick stand out a lot.
